A New-Generation Building Energy Simulation Program

EnergyPlus is a new-generation building energy simulation program based on DOE-2 and BLAST, with numerous added capabilities. Released in April 2001, the program was developed jointly by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of Illinois, the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, GARD Analytics, Inc., Oklahoma State University and others, with support from the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Building Technology, State and Community Programs. EnergyPlus is a trademark of the U.S. Department of Energy, Dru Crawley, Program Manager.

Obtaining an EnergyPlus License

In order to use EnergyPlus, you must execute a license agreement. A brief explanation of each license type is presented below. For an in-depth explanation of license types, click here.

End User License Agreement -- Free
Allows internal use of the EnergyPlus executable.

Distribution License Agreement
Grants you the right to distribute the EnergyPlus executable or use it in a web-based application.

Source Code Addendum to the Distribution License Agreement
Allows internal use of the EnergyPlus source code to develop derivative works. You may execute a Source Code Addendum at the same time as executing the Distribution License Agreement or at a later date; however, to obtain the Source Code Addendum you must also purchase a Distribution License Agreement.

Collaborative Developer's License Agreement
This license allows you to inspect the EnergyPlus source code in-house and to create derivative works from it for non-commercial purposes. This license requires that you provide, at no cost, to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory any improvements you make and such improvements (other than user interfaces) will be considered for incorporation into a future version of EnergyPlus. If you want to distribute your derivative work, you must obtain a Distribution License Agreement.
